How to make your own chicken broth

It’s SO easy to make your own chicken stock!

Step 1: Wash and prep your chicken

Rinse the chicken in cool water and remove the organs from inside the chicken. You can add the neck to the pot for even more added flavor, or you can just discard it. Then, stick the carrot and celery into the cavity of the chicken and place the chicken into a 6 quart pot of cool water. Add all the seasonings and the apple cider vinegar to the pot and place the pot over high heat.

Step 2: Crack the lid of the pot and simmer

Once the chicken comes to a roaring boil over high heat, turn the heat down to medium-low and simmer for two hours, or until the broth is golden and the chicken is falling off the bone.

Step 3: Remove the chicken from the broth

Before using or storing your broth, remove the chicken and strain the broth through a fine mesh strainer. Allow the broth to cool completely and store in mason jars or airtight containers. If you are freezing the broth, make sure to leave one inch of headspace in the mason jar to allow the broth room to expand.

faq making your own broth

What is the Difference Between Stock and Broth? Chicken stock is made from the bones of a chicken, whereas broth is made from the meat and generally has more seasonings. Broth also has a shorter cooking time and is more frequently used for sipping in soups and dishes like my homemade chicken and dumplins, whereas stock is cooked over a long period of time and used more often for cooking into recipes like my easy creamy chicken pot pie. Stock is also thicker, and more nutrient dense. The two can be used interchangeably, though!

Is it Cheaper to Make Your Own Broth? This is hard to say, since you can purchase store bought chicken broth for only a few dollars and the chicken itself costs at least $5-7. But you have to take quality into account. The store bought, commercial version is not nearly as nutrient dense as homemade and is full of sodium and unknown “natural flavorings”. Whereas, when you make things from scratch, YOU are the quality control expert! And also, you can pick the meat off of the chicken and use it for at least one meal.

Is Chicken Broth Healthy? Yes! Did you know, it has actually been scientifically proven as a treatment for respiratory illness? It has anti-inflammatory properties and also contains vitamins and minerals as well as protein and fatty acids that are great for your health!
