What is a simple smoked salmon spread?

Even though i didn’t grow up eating fish, I’ve come to love it as an adult. And this Simple Smoked Salmon Spread was one of the first recipes that won me over. OH BOY. The first time I made it I was hooked. While it isn’t the prettiest dish ever, the smoky flavor, creamy mayo, and savory spices just won me over. I’ve even adapted this recipe so that my husband and I can enjoy it while we are on Whole 30.

How to smoke salmon

First, the key is to perfectly smoke the salmon. Before putting it onto the smoker, I rinse it under cool water and pat it dy. Then, brush on olive oil and season to taste with salt and pepper. I typically use about 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of black pepper.

My husband then puts it onto the smoker at 225 degrees for around 60 minutes- or until it reaches an internal temperature of 145. You’ll want to watch it closely because it does cook quickly and if left on the smoker past 145 it will become very dry!

How to serve simple smoked salmon dip

This delicious smoked spread is best served on a piece of Sourdough toast or with fresh sliced veggies or crackers. You can plate it up along with a few other salads- like this Perfect Chicken Salad. We love it with whole or sliced pepperoncini peppers as well, especially on a piece of sourdough!

faq and substitutions

Whole 30 Adaption:

Swap out the Classic Mayo for Avocado Oil Mayo by Primal Kitchen and replace the Worcestershire sauce with Coconut Aminos (I like the Simple Truth Brand). The spread will be slightly sweeter due to the coconut Aminos, but we don’t mind!

Can I substitute another fish for the Sockeye Salmon? We have made this spread with fresh Tuna as well and it turned out delicious! I can’t say about other varieties, but if you try it please let me know!

Why Sockeye Salmon? Sockeye Salmon has a deeper, richer flavor than Pink Salmon, so it produces a much more flavorful smoked fish. Sockeye Salmon is also higher in fat content and Omega 3 fatty acids, so it is healthier for you as well!
