I just wrote in another post about why your summer garden starts now, so this is a follow up post to tell you my top 4 favorite places to get seeds online, and why you should give them your business as well! There are lots of online seed companies, but these really stand above the rest in terms of seed quality, customer experience, and substantive business missions.
1. SEED SAVERS EXCHANGE
This company is known for its remarkably diverse bank of rare and heirloom seeds. They offer organic, heirloom, vegetable, and flower seeds, and also provide relevant, educational content for at home growers. You can browse their website for articles on seed saving, attracting pollinators, seed starting and more. Plus, their mission is one that we should all stand behind. Over the last 100 years, the agricultural industry shifted its focus to produce food that is disease resistant, uniform, and easily mass produced. This has triggered an extinction of varieties that were formerly commonplace in backyards and on tables across the US. Seed Savers is working hard to make sure that these seeds are not only preserved but also being distributed and grown once again. You can read more about why that is important here OR check out this quick video from their website.
2. Bakers creek heirloom seed
I have ordered seeds from Bakers Creek a few times now and I always end up ordering more than I planned on because their website and social media accounts are BEAUTIFUL. They do such a good job of showing you the potential of what they have to offer. It is so inspiring that I want to grow it all! Seriously, check out their website. It’s like flipping through a magazine. These guys are also a great company with a similar mission to protect seed diversity and educate the at home gardener.
3. Hoss tools
These guys are SO fun. They are located out of Georgia and just seem so down to earth and accessible. They have a fantastic video channel where they provide excellent informational content specific to the varieties that they offer. It has been immensely helpful to us in getting started with some varieties that we were new to growing. Their seeds have been 100% productive for us, which just confirms that the quality really is top notch. Not to mention, I think I got my seeds the NEXT DAY after ordering this year.
4. Johnny’s SelEcted seeds
A few years ago, we tilled up our entire sizable back yard and cultivated a HUGE summer garden. We were shocked at our success and I began confidently researching where to get more seed varieties. Johnny’s came up in every single list. Not only do they offer seeds, but they also provide a wide selection of tools- including this hand held soil blocker, which is at the top of my list of new garden tools to buy.
So that it! My top 4 picks for online seed distribution. I don’t know about you, but I’ve already gotten all my seeds for this summer’s upcoming garden and I periodically sneak into the laundry room to look at the pretty packages and dream about being covered in garden dirt.
Do you have a favorite seed company that wasn’t listed here? I’d love to hear about it!
Thanks so much for the info! I’ll definitely check them out. We have a small raised bed that we plant a few things in, maybe one day I’ll have a real garden!
